Gallardo set to avoid woeful stat this Saturday

Copa Libertadores final - The woeful record River's boss will try to leave behind

November 21, 2019 By Oscar Rojas
'El Muñeco' is currently leading one of River's most successful eras of all time, but his past has not always been successful when playing in Peru.

River Plate may seem to be the favorite to win the 2019 Copa Libertadores, but their coach -and the players- will have to forget about a relevant precedent for the club that took place at the same country where Los Millonarios will try to win their fifth trophy in this competition.

Gallardo's run as River's coach has seen him claim seven titles with Los Millonarios, the most by any coach in team history. Nevertheless, the former midfielder will try to end a hoodoo in Peru, where Los Millonarios have never won an international title. To make matters worse, the only chance they had to do so ended in nightmare, with Gallardo watching the team's downfall on the pitch.

Gallardo playing against Cienciano in the 2003 Copa Sudamericana final.

This will be the second continental title clash for River Plate to take place in Peru, following the 2003 Copa Sudamericana title. Back then, River Plate faced Cienciano in the title match, which was played on a two-leg format.

The first game ended in a 3-3 draw, which gave the Peruvian side the upper hand due to the away goals rule. The second leg took place in Lima, and there, Cienciano took the title home by beating River Plate with a 1-0 score. With that in mind, the former player-turned-coach Marcelo Gallardo will try to avoid another loss in the same country with the same team.

This will be the 15th South American competition where River Plate will be aiming to win the title, with nine of those ending in wins for Los Millonarios. Will Gallardo and Co. win back-to-back Copa Libertadores titles for the first time for the Argentine squad?
