Tottenham drops transfer market bombshell on Jose

Tottenham drops January transfer market bombshell on Mourinho

November 20, 2019 By Emmanuel K. Budu-Annor
The Portuguese manager has met his first obstacle following his latest appointment.

New Tottenham Hotspur boss Jose Mourinho may yet face another big challenge ahead of the upcoming winter transfer window. While the main objective remains for the Portuguese manager to get the North London outfit's Premier League season back on track, a report that has emerged suggests that he will have no money to spend in January in a bid to bolster his squad.

The 56-year-old was confirmed as the new Spurs boss on early Wednesday morning following the sack of Mauricio Pochettino on Tuesday evening. Having signed a four-year-deal with the North London outfit, the former Manchester United headcoach has already led his first training session. Mourinho inherits a rich squad which features the likes of Harry Kane, Christian Eriksen, Heung-min Son, Hugo Lloris, Dele Alli, Ndombele Tanguy among others.

However, the prospect of the Portuguese manager bringing fresh legs on board in January seems like a far cry amid fresh reports. According to the Guardian, he has been told that 'he will have to work with Tottenham's existing squad as there is no money for an overhaul in January'. The reason stated is that Spurs 'must make big repayments on their new stadium' and with the team currently ranked 14th in the Premier League, there are concerns that they could miss out on Champions League revenue next season.

Club chairman Daniel Levy has a reputation of being strict with spendings in the transfer window and this was even evident during Pochettino's tenure. In contrast, Jose Mourinho is known for not being afraid to splash the big bucks for players he wants and currently ranks as the highest spending manager in football history.

As per Transfermarkt, the former Man United manager has spent over 1.6 billion euros in recruiting 97 players. As to how this new marriage will work out remains to be seen.
