Report: Jose Mourinho named as favorite to replace Mauricio Pochettino

November 19, 2019 By Emmanuel K. Budu-Annor
The former Manchester United manager is odds on to replace the departed Spurs manager.

Jose Mourinho has emerged as the prime candidate to succeed Mauricio Pochettino as the new Tottenham Hotspur boss, a report from England has revealed. While a number of top Europe managers have been cited, the former Manchester United manager has been ranked as the favorite for the job.

On Tuesday, Spurs released a statement confirming the sack of Mauricio Pochettino, barely six months after the Argentine led to the side to a second-place finish in the 2019 UEFA Champions League. According to club chairman Daniel Levy, the decision was made on the back of the fact that the North Londoners performed poorly in the Premier League at the latter part of last season and are yet to recover in the new season.

Currently, Tottenham Hotspur ranks 14th on the league table, picking up just three wins from 12 outings so far this season. As a result, the need to seek a fresh face who will come in and attempt to salvage the situation presented itself.

According ace journalist Fabrizio Romano, former Chelsea and Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho is the man Spurs are hoping to call up to fix their current predicament. The 56-year-old Portuguese manager has been out of the dugout in almost a year, having been laid off by the Red Devils for their poor start to the 2018/2019 Premier League season.

Since then, the two-time UEFA Champions League winner has mostly performed punditry duties while being linked with moves to top European clubs. In recent weeks, Bayern Munich has been touted has a potential destination following the sack of Niko Kovac.

Despite being odds on for the Spurs job, reports suggest that Mourinho could be rivaled by former Juventus manager Massimiliano Allegri as well as current boss of RB Leipzig Julian Nagelsmann. Sky Sports have claimed that the latter looks unlikely to move away with his side currently sitting ranking second in the Bundesliga.
