La Liga isn’t the only competition eager to stage games across the Atlantic, with UEFA exploring the option of staging a Champions League final in the USA. According to one report, they are in discussions to hold the 2024 final in New York.
European football’s governing body are reportedly looking into whether it can be suitable to stage the climax game of their top club-football completion in the Big Apple. This is according to the Morning Consult who claim talks are underway between UEFA and commercial partners.
This season’s showpiece final will be held in Istanbul, and with 2021, 2022, and 2023 already being awarded to Saint Petersburg, Munich, and London; 2024 is the proposed date. Furthermore, the MetLife Stadium in New Jersey is the preferred venue.
This would be the first time a Champions League final took place outside of Europe. There were previous attempts to stage games in the United States but they never materialized. If this proposal goes through, it will likely be met with criticism.
Furthermore, a source claims the competition will switch broadcasting rights from Turner Sport to CBS come the 2021/2022 season. Currently, the Champions League is aired on TNT but a three-year deal with CBS will begin in August 2021. Univision will keep ahold of Spanish-language broadcasting rights. They will be forced to fork out $140M per season for those rights, an increase from the current $100M-per-season package.
