The South American footballers have been compared frequently to determine who can be named as the best between them.

The never-ending debate on who should be considered as the best player of all time in Argentina has added one more chapter to its history, as former striker and former all-time top scorer for La Albiceleste, Gabriel Batistuta, shared his views on that matter.

Speaking in an interview with Perform, "Batigol" referred to his time with Maradona as an unforgettable experience, and if the decision was up to him, he'd choose "El Pelusa" over "La Pulga" any day of the week, despite Messi's natural ability.

"When we played against Greece in 1994, Maradona was right in front of me, playing for Argentina and wearing the captain's armband. It was a dream of mine. Then, I went on to score three goals but I can't remember any of them, all I can think of is Diego. That's the image I have of that game, and to me, he's the best of them all. He had been out of the game and he led us to the World Cup, and I got to be there with him," Batistuta said.

"Batigol" scored 56 goals in 78 games for La Albiceleste. He ended his international career in 2002.

Then, the former Fiorentina and Roma ace openly admitted that Messi may be impressive on the pitch, but he lacks the leadership skills that made Maradona a true legend and icon.

He's the best because of many things. When it comes to their technique, Messi might be better, but Maradona could change a game just with his personality, and that's something Messi can't do. Leo is the best in the world right now, but Maradona is the best of all time. Either way, it's just my opinion," Batistuta added.

Batistuta's goalscoring record with La Albiceleste was surpassed by Messi in 2016. Nevertheless, Messi has not been able to win any major trophies with the South American side, something that Batistuta managed to accomplish with two consecutive Copa América wins in 1991 and 1993.
