The Aussie forward made history in 2019 and now aims to win the NWSL Championship for the first time.

Sunday’s National Women’s Soccer League final will bring the curtain down on the 2019 season. North Carolina Courage and Chicago Red Stars will battle it out in the NWSL Championship this weekend, with one side set to come away with the title.

For Sam Kerr, it’s the perfect opportunity to cap off her record-breaking season. To say the Australian forward is a goalscoring machine would be an understatement. Not only did the 26-year-old win the Golden Boot and guide the Red Stars to a second-place finish, earning them a spot in the playoffs, but it was her winning goal against Portland Thorns that sent her team to the NWSL Championship.

Kerr finished the regular season with a whopping 18 goals. Furthermore, the fact that she assisted another five meant she contributed to over half of her team’s goals in the 2019 campaign – 56% of Red Stars 41 goals during the regular season.

With her 18 goals in the regular season and one in the playoff, Kerr will have Courage afraid

Her 18 strikes meant that she broke the record for most goals by a single player in a single regular NWSL season. The previous record was held by none other than herself (17 goals in 2017). She was one of only two players to reach double-digit figures, the other being Courage’s Lynn Williams with 12 goals. Kerr achieved all of this despite representing Australia in the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

This was the third season in a row in which she won the Golden Boot. Sam is the NWSL’s all-time leading goalscorer in regular seasons with a whopping 77 strikes. The Aussie forward has only ever won the NWSL Shield but given her form, she could get her hands on the National Women’s Soccer League Championship for the first time.

Kerr’s 2019 has been nothing short of amazing. She has been nominated for the 2019 Ballon d’Or Féminin, which is an honor, but beating North Carolina Courage on Sunday is her top priority.
