Liverpool fails to match Man City's EPL record

Liverpool fails to match Man City's 18 successive wins record with Man Utd draw

October 20, 2019 By Emmanuel K. Budu-Annor
Jurgen Klopp's men did not get a win in a Premier League fixture for the first time since March.

Premier League leaders Liverpool could not match Manchester City's record of 18 consecutive wins following Sunday's draw with Manchester United. The Reds were made to fight back from a goal down and eventually had to settle for a 1-1 final outcome at Old Trafford.

The hosts took the lead in the 38th-minute via Marcus Rashford through a counter-attacking move which ensued after Victor Lindelof had purportedly fouled Divock Origi in the his side's half. Despite protests from Jurgen Klopp's men, the lead was made to stand after referee Martin Atkinson consulted the VAR.

Liverpool's clearest chance to restore parity came five minutes later through Sadio Mane. However, the Senegalese forward saw his goal overruled by the VAR after he appeared to have controlled the ball with his arm before slotting it past David de Gea.

Chances did not elude both sides in the second half but it was the current league leaders who made the most of it by scoring the only goal of the second half, thanks to substitute Adam Lallana. The English midfielder simply tapped in a cross from Andrew Robertson for his first Liverpool goal in over two years just six minutes away from stoppage time.

In essence, while the Reds' unbeaten run in the league remains intact their 17-game run which spans from last season was halted in Manchester. They were, as a result, denied the chance to match the 18 successive victories milestone set by Pep Guardiola's Man City in 2017.

Relatively, Manchester United upheld it record of not losing a Premier League game after leading at half-time since May 1984.
