UWCL Last 16: Atletico seals 1st leg draw vs City

UEFA Women's Champions League: Atletico scores late to snatch Last 16 draw vs Man City

October 16, 2019 By Emmanuel K. Budu-Annor
The two teams could not be seperated in the first leg tie.

Atletico Madrid kept its hopes of progressing to the quarter-final of this year's Women Champions League alive by securing a 1-1 draw away to Manchester City in Wednesday's tie. Thanks to Charlyn Corral's 81st-minute equaliser, Los Rojiblancos will have the opportunity to dent the chances of their English opponents in the second leg at the Wanda Metropolitano, come October 30.

It was the Citizens who showed early signs of urgency and strong intent by opening the scoring in as early as the 13th minute. Forward Janine Beckie was the lady to get on the scoresheet after she pounced on Keira Walsh's through-ball to slot it past the Atletico's Sari van Veenendaal.

Despite chances flowing the way of both sides after the opener, the visitors could only get their most vital goal with time minutes of regulation time remaining. It was Brazilian winger Ludmila Da Silva who did the most work in setting up the goal, beating Roebuck with her pace on the right flank before cutting back for Charlyn Corral to tie the score at one-all in the 81st-minute.

Following the end to the proceeding, Atletico boss Pablo Lopez Salgado commended his ladies for their efforts but insisted that his side could have carried the day had his plan worked out. "I tried to give small ideas of how I want my team to play. I have an extraordinary group with players who want to learn. They make it very easy for me.

"We controlled the game. It was a good result for us but we could have won. But obviously I am very happy overall."

Going into the second leg, the task to qualify to the last eight stage has become quite daunting for Manchester City considering the fact that Atletico Madrid has not lost a competitive home game since October 2018. However, manager of the Citizens, Nick Cushing, remained unfazed by the upcoming challenge.

"We are capable of winning the second game," he declared.

"The away goal means zero because we had it last year and got beat. The away goals only really matter if you score again in the second leg.

"I think we can be better at stopping the counter-attacks. We have two tough games but we want to welcome Georgia Stanway and Ellen White back and we're excited for Manchester United now."
