Van Dijk downplays early EPL title chances

Van Dijk downplays Liverpool's early Premier League title chances

October 7, 2019 By Emmanuel K. Budu-Annor
The defender has refused to give in to early claims that his side is on course to winning the league title.

Liverpool's Virgil Van Dijk has insisted that it will be too early to label the Reds as potential champions despite their domineering start. The Dutch defender claims that "anything can happen" albeit the Merseysiders winning all their league fixtures so far.

Liverpool has put in its best start yet in the Premier League era by recording eight wins out of eight. At the moment, the reigning European champions sit atop the league table with 24 points - eight more than current holders Manchester City. Last season, the pair battled till the final matchday before the Citizens were eventually crowned champions and, according to Van Dijk, the potential of fate repeating itself means that his side cannot have their hopes high just yet.

"So far we have been getting the points," he told Sky Sports.

"There is always room for improvement in our game. And I think we should just focus on all the games ahead of us and don't look at any gaps or points or difference between us and the others, including City.

"There are a lot of busy periods coming up as well with December and January and anything can happen still."

The Netherlands center-back, who has joined up with his international teammates for the upcoming Euro 2020 qualifiers against Northern Ireland and Belarus further expressed his surprise at Manchester City's defeat to Wolves on Sunday.

"I didn't expect that, of course.

"I think everyone expected a difficult game for City, but when City are at home it never really happens that they don't score at least one goal.

"It was a great performance from Wolves, and you have to give credit to them. But they (City) will try and bounce back from it. Until then I've just got to focus on international football."
