Ramos insults linesman: What the defender allegedly said in Madrid Derby

September 29, 2019 By Ali M.
Simeone and Atletico were left infuriated as the Real Madrid captain hurled an insult at the assistant referee but went unpunished.

Saturday’s Madrid Derby ended goalless, which was not what many expected nor hoped for. In the absence of goals, one incident has garnered controversy and anger from Atletico Madrid.

It is alleged that Sergio Ramos, the captain of Real Madrid, insulted the assistant referee during the weekend clash. According to AS, the Spanish defender threw a foul-mouthed remark at the linesman during the first half but the report did not mention exactly when this incident occurred.

It is said that the Blancos skipper called one of the linesmen a “son of a b****h”. This left Diego Simeone enraged as the 33-year-old was neither given a red card nor a yellow.

El Cholo aired his dissatisfaction to referee González González, but no punishment was dished out. A “mild scuffle” then erupted in the tunnel.

The reason for the Atletico boss’ anger stems from Los Rojiblancos’ clash with Barcelona from last season. In that Camp Nou affair, Atletico saw Diego Costa get sent off for a similar offense to what Ramos committed: insulting an official’s mother.

The Spaniard was subsequently banned for eight games – four for insulting the referee and another four for grabbing his arm. Whether Sergio will be slapped with a similar punishment is unlikely.

When asked about the incident after the game, Simeone said: "What happens on the pitch stays on the pitch, but the linesman knows what he said." This means that officials were aware of Ramos’ actions, throwing out the chances of a retrospective ban.

Atletico and Real Madrid went on to play a 0-0 draw in that game, meaning Los Blancos continue to top the standings while Los Rojiblancos have been leapfrogged by Granada in second by goal difference.
