Both Van Dijk and CR7 were close to the Argentine, but 'La Pulga' was the one to take home the trophy.

Lionel Messi claimed one more individual award in his ilustrious career, but he did not claim it by a landslide as it once was.

This award is handed out to the player that earns more votes from fans, coaches, colleagues and journalists, with each vote counting for 25% of the award. The player with the higher amount of "points" gets to take the trophy home, and surprisingly, Messi will have to make space for this award after beating Van Dijk, who made it to the runner-up spot, by just eight points.

Messi was acknowledged as The Best with 46% of the votes. Van Dijk came in second with 38% of the votes. Meanwhile, Cristiano Ronaldo earned the remaining 36% of the votes.
