FIFA The Best Award voting revealed

FIFA The Best Award - Final voting lists show narrow margin for Messi's win

September 23, 2019 By Oscar Rojas
Both Van Dijk and CR7 were close to the Argentine, but 'La Pulga' was the one to take home the trophy.

Lionel Messi claimed one more individual award in his ilustrious career, but he did not claim it by a landslide as it once was.

This award is handed out to the player that earns more votes from fans, coaches, colleagues and journalists, with each vote counting for 25% of the award. The player with the higher amount of "points" gets to take the trophy home, and surprisingly, Messi will have to make space for this award after beating Van Dijk, who made it to the runner-up spot, by just eight points.

Messi was acknowledged as The Best with 46% of the votes. Van Dijk came in second with 38% of the votes. Meanwhile, Cristiano Ronaldo earned the remaining 36% of the votes.

There Top 10 list was further revealed by FIFA, showing that Sadio Mané's wonderful year only saw him claim the fifth spot in this list, with team-mate Mo Salah in fourth. Kylian Mbappé was 6th, followed closely by Frenkie de Jong. Eden Hazard, Matthijs De Ligt and Harry Kane were the last names included in this list.

Further details emerged on how each player voted to see this awards being handed out. Messi voted for Sadio Mané in first place, with Cristiano Ronaldo making it to second place in Messi's ranking, and Frenkie de Jong completing his top 3. Virgil Van Dijk gave Messi the top spot in his ranking, followed by Mo Salah and Sadio Mané. Cristiano Ronaldo gave Matthijs De Ligt the top spot, with Frenkie de Jong and Kylian Mbappé completing his top three.
