The Argentine has had ill-luck in that particular awards category for more than a decade.

Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi will go down in history as the first player to miss out on winning the FIFA Puskas Award despite being nominated seven times in the last 11 years.

The 32-year-old Argentine striker was featured among the final three contestants in the category as a recognition for his cheeky goal against Real Betis last season. In the league clash, the Barca skipper spectacularly lobbed a ball over Los Verdes Blancos' Pau Lopez to seal a 4-1 victory for Ernesto Valverde's side.

However, despite the technicality and the visual aesthetic of the strike, Lionel Messi was pipped to the 2019 FIFA Puskas Award by former Debrecen man Daniel Zsori. The 18-year-old midfielder came off the bench to score an extraordinary overhead-kick goal in the 93rd minute which secured a 2-1 win for his side against Ferencvaros in the Hungarian league.

The significance of the youngster's award win is that, for the seventh time, Lionel Messi will go home without the Puskas Award. Since the inception of the award category in 2009, the five-Ballon d'Or winner has received more nominations than any player.
