Three candidates linked with Real Madrid job

The three candidates tipped to take over Real Madrid should Zidane be sacked

September 21, 2019 By Ali M.
Zidane is under heavy pressure early on in the season, with many calling for the Frenchman's sacking.

It’s only five games into the new season for Real Madrid, including their European campaign, but many are already calling for Zidane to be sacked. The man who left Santiago Bernabeu as an icon returned to the Spanish capital last season to save Los Blancos after disastrous spells under Lopetegui and Solari but things haven’t gone well for the Frenchman.

First of all, the 1998 World Cup winner has won less than half of his games during his second spell, boasting only seven wins from 16 games. Five have ended in defeat and despite a major summer spending spree, Los Blancos still can’t find their rhythm, hence the 3-0 loss to PSG in their Champions League opener.

Some argue that Real Madrid need a tactics manager to guide them out of this crisis and as a result, Marca have named three candidates likely to take over should Zizou be axed. The Spanish news publication states that the club usually look to free agents or Real Madrid Castilla for a manager and have thus deduced three names.

The biggest name on that list is Jose Mourinho. The Portuguese tactician has been out of work since being sacked by Man United last year. The Special One is highly-respected by Florentino Perez, with the president admitting he regrets letting him leave the Bernabeu back in 2013.

Jose has distanced himself from the job, however. The former Man United and Chelsea boss recently squashed rumors of a return, claiming that Zidane is the man in charge.

The two other names mentioned in the report are Massimiliano Allegri and Raul. Allegri, like Mourinho, is also a free agent after bidding farewell to Juventus over the summer, making him an ideal option. Raul, meanwhile, would have to be promoted from Castilla, as Zidane was when he succeeded Benitez, should the legendary forward become first-team manager.

Xabi Alonso, who currently is the manager at Real Sociedad B, has also been linked with the Real Madrid position. However, Zidane still has time to turn things around, starting with Sunday’s tricky trip to Sevilla.
