Cross-town rivals AC Milan and Inter will lock horns in the latest installment of the Derby della Madonnina on Saturday, September 21.

Preview: Milan vs Inter

Two teams with contrasting fortunes in Serie A will come to a head as the latest installment of the Milan Derby gets underway this weekend. Both teams are under the tutelage of new coaches, but for the Rossoneri, it's been hardly smooth sailing so far under Marco Giampaolo. Although on paper it appears they have recovered well from a shock opening loss to Udinese to pick up two wins, those two victories were hardly convincing.

Since playing Udinese, the Diavolo had not had a tough fixture list, facing small teams like Brescia and Hellas Verona, but have struggled to get results. Although they earned all three points against those teams, they really had to labor and struggle to get a 1-0 win, and against Verona, they actually needed a penalty to break down a 10-man Gialloblu who parked the bus to maximum effect. Likewise, Brescia, who are also another team newly promoted from Serie B also employed the same tactics against the Rossoneri and it nearly paid off, with Milan struggling to find inroads against an ultra-defensive opponent.

Meanwhile, Inter will be looking to get back to winning ways after a surprise draw to Eastern European outfit Slavia in the Champions League. So far, Antonio Conte's side have been flawless in Serie A and have opened up a small two-point gap over the chasing pack as they are the only team with a perfect 100 per cent winning record after their first three games.

Match facts: Milan vs Inter

Key talking point: Milan's recent hoodoo against Inter...but does the derby being played on a Saturday mean anything at all?

Excluding the Coppa Italia quarter-finals in 2017, Milan haven't beaten Inter in Serie A in over three years. The last time this happened was back in the 90's, when they went nine without a victory.

However, this derby is being played on a Saturday. Does that bode well for Milan?

Let's have a look. Out of the 13 Derby della Madonninas in Serie A played on Saturdays, six have been won by Milan. The most recent victory, however was a 3-0 result in April 2011. Meanwhile, Inter have won three times, and there have been four stalemates.

So overall no, unless if one wants to grasp at straws, and the fact that Milan have gone six derby clashes in Serie A sans a victory (seven if one extends that to all comps), the odds are somewhat tipped in Inter's favor here. Of course, a derby game is certainly a motivating factor and Milan have the huge advantage of not competing in Europe - which means more rest. As a result, they could definitely spring a huge surprise on Conte's side and end their perfect winning streak this Saturday.

Team news: Milan vs Inter

Milan: Davide Calabria is suspended, while Mattia Caldara is still out due to a knee injury.

Inter: No injuries or suspensions for the Nerazzurri, meaning that Conte has a full-strength squad at his disposal.
