Liverpool star deletes Twitter account after social media abuse

September 18, 2019 By Emmanuel K. Budu-Annor
The player was criticized heavily for the role he played in the Reds' away defeat.

Liverpool left-back Andrew Robertson has deactivated his Twitter account after being subjected to online abuse by trolls. The 25-year-old defenders' decision comes on the back of Tuesday's away defeat to Napoli where he conceded a penalty to gift the hosts the opportunity to score the opener in the Champions League encounter.

With eight minutes of normal time left to play, the Scottish international fouled Jose Callejon in the penalty area and drew a spot-kick instantly. Dries Mertens subsequently stepped up to convert from the spot before summer-signing Fernando Llorente sealed the win the 92nd minute.

Following the end to the clash in Naples, Jurgen Klopp slammed the authenticity of the penalty awarded to the hosts and maintained that the attacker took a dive. Nevertheless, that was not enough to convince his side's fan-base from descending on Robertson who only sought to prevent Callejon from making an attempt on goal.

Since then, the Scottish full-back has deleted his official Twitter account with many users expressing their disgust toward the tweets aimed at him.
