Five records and feats that could be set on Matchday 1 in the Champions League

September 16, 2019 By Ali M.
Everyone's favorite European competition returns on Tuesday. Here are five records and feats that could be achieved in the first round.

The Champions League is back! Everyone’s favorite European competition makes its return on Tuesday, with Inter Milan vs Slavia Praha and Lyon vs Zenit kicking off Matchday 1.

Several interesting games are scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday, with reigning champions Liverpool opening their title defense with a trip to Napoli while Dortmund and Barcelona are set to do battle in Germany.

Elsewhere, PSG and Real Madrid will lock horns while Atletico Madrid and Juventus will face off once more. Here are five records and feats that could be achieved on Matchday 1 in the Champions League.

Ansu Fati: The UCL’s youngest goalscorer?

With Lionel Messi yet to play a game this season, Ansu Fati has been stealing the headlines at Barcelona. The winger has broken records in La Liga so far, becoming the youngest Blaugrana scorer, youngest scorer at Camp Nou, and the youngest player to score and assist in the same game. On Tuesday, he could become the youngest player to score in the Champions League at the age of 16 years and 322 days.

Dortmund eyeing their first win over Barca

These two clubs have met only twice before over a two-legged UEFA Super Cup affair. Barcelona won the first leg 2-0 at Camp Nou and managed a 1-1 draw in the return leg, meaning the Germans could get their first win over the Catalan giants on Tuesday.

Valencia aiming to end winless run against Chelsea

These two clubs have faced six times before and Valencia is yet to win a single game against Chelsea. In fact, the Spanish outfit have lost two of their three home encounters with the Blues. However, it should be pointed out that Valencia have lost only once at Stamford Bridge, the venue for this clash, while drawing their other two trips to London.

Milner and Di Maria eyeing Champions League centurions

Two players who are on 99 Champions League games and in search of their 100th appearance are James Milner and Angel Di Maria. Both will likely reach this feat this midweek, with the Argentine more likely to start given the absence of Mbappe for PSG’s clash with Real Madrid.

Juve to end away woes or Atletico to continue winning home run

Juventus’ Champions League campaign last term came to an end at Ajax. That was their third consecutive away defeat for the Italian giants, having lost at Atletico and Young Boys before bowing out against the Dutch giants. They will want to put this run to an end but will have to end Los Rojiblancos’ nine-game winning streak at home in Europe.
