Neymar, Cavani, Mbappe to miss Real Madrid clash

Official: Neymar, Cavani, Mbappe to miss PSG's Champions League opener vs Real Madrid

September 16, 2019 By Emmanuel K. Budu-Annor
The attacking trio will be amiss when their side welcomes the Spanish giants to Parc des Princes on Wednesday.

Paris Saint-Germain will be without its deadly attacking trio of Neymar Jr, Edinson Cavani and Kylian Mbappe its Champions League opener against Real Madrid, the club has confirmed. Les Parisiens will fancy their chances against the former champions with two of their star men injured while the other is suspended.

Neymar Jr, who was met with a hostile reception in his season-debut at Parc des Princes on Saturday, will be ineligible to feature after being handed a three-game ban last season. The 28-year-old Brazilian superstar was sanctioned by UEFA for his social media comments about officiating following his side's shock elimination by Manchester United last season.

Cavani, on the other hand, is nearing fully recover after being ruled out of action for almost four weeks. The Uruguayan striker was replaced in the early minutes of the encounter with Toulouse in August having gone down with an injury to his right adductor.

In the same match-up, Thomas Tuchel's side lost French sensation Kylian Mbappe to a muscle injury. The 20-year-old World Cup winner, despite training away from the squad last week, is not expected to be ready to face Madrid according to a medical update by the club.

"Now it's official, I will not start our Champions League campaign at home against Real Madrid," Mbappe tweeted in wake of the news.

"I am very sad for not being able to play, but I will give all my support from the stands to the team. I hope to return 100% to always give my best."

Meanwhile, Julian Draxler and Thilo Kehrer are still undergoing treatment and are not expected to play any role in the upcoming test.
