De Gea becomes Man Utd's top-earner with new deal

Report: De Gea becomes Manchester United highest-earner after signing new contract

September 13, 2019 By Emmanuel K. Budu-Annor
The Spanish goalie has leapfrogged Paul Pogba to the become the best-paid player after committing his long-term future to the club.

David De Gea's transfer saga at Manchester United is finally over after committing his long-term future to the Premier League club, reports have indicated. The Spanish goalkeeper is said to have penned a new five-year deal and has now become the Red Devils' highest-paid player with a net salary of about $16.6 million.

The talk of a new deal for De Gea has dragged for a few seasons now with both De Gea and his club failing to reach mutual grounds in the contract negotiations. With the Old Trafford outfit refusing to accept his demands, the 28-year-old shot-stopper was tipped to leave on a free next summer as he was in the final year of his previous contract ahead of the new season.

The likes of Juventus, Paris Saint-Germain have all been tipped as the Spaniard's potential destination despite Ole Gunnar Solskjaer previously debunking the claims and retaining faith he would remain at the club. Indeed, the Norwegian manager's declarations have seemingly manifested with the Daily Record's Duncan Castles reporting that the former Atletico Madrid has unofficially committed his future to the Manchester club.

The claims come days after reports emerged that the 28-year-old goalie was set to reject the United's offer in a bid to leave as a free agent next summer. As per the Sun, he has already told his friends and relatives about his decision to snub the new offer on the table.

Contrary the narrative, Castles claims that David De Gea has signed an improved deal worth over $16.6 million - pipping Paul Pogba to become the Red Devils' best-paid player. Normally, the contract is supposed to last for four-years but Manchester United retains the obligation to extend his stay to a fifth year.
