The former centre-back of the Spanish club is set for an imminent appointment

Barcelona legend Carles Puyol is nearing a come back to Camp Nou, the club's president Josep Bartomeu has confirmed. The 41-year-old former skipper of the Blaugrana could potentially be filling the vacant sporting manager position, five years after announcing his retirement.

Puyol enjoyed an illustrious career with the Catalans spanning from 1999 to 2014 and was an instrumental figure in the success story of the club within that period. He featured in almost 600 matches for the Camp Nou outfit, winning a total of 26 trophies along the way.

In a recent interview with Barca TV, President Josep Maria Bartomeu cited that Puyol could make a return with talks underway for him to potentially take on the sporting manager role in a few weeks. Should he be successfully considered, he will be working alongside his former teammate Eric Abidal as well as Ramon Planes in Barca's sporting department.

"We're discussing his [Puyol's] return to the club," Bartomeu told Barca TV as per Marca.

"Let's hope we can reach an agreement because he knows a lot about football and organisation.

"He's been out of work and preparing himself more.

"I would like Carles Puyol to come back.

"I want to fill the vacant sporting manager's job, even though it's not an emergency right now."
