The former Ajax sensation was honored for his performance in last season's Champions League campaign.

Football fans on social media have expressed mixed feelings after Barcelona starlet Frenkie de Jong scooped the 2018/2019 UEFA Champions League Midfielder of the Season award. The 22-year-old Dutchman received the recognition at the Grimaldi Forum in Monaco on Thursday, August 29.

De Jong, who joined Barca from Ajax this summer was exceptional for the Eredivisie side in its spectacular charge in last season's European campaign. A defeat in the penultimate clash with Tottenham Hotspur denied Erik ten Hag and his men the opportunity to have a shot at fight for the trophy for the first time in 24 years.

Nonetheless, the feat was enough to land De Jong a spot in the 20 man squad for the Champions League team of the season released by the UEFA Technical Observers back in June. on Thursday, the Netherlands international topped up the recognition by being adjudged the UEFA Champions League Midfielder of the 2019/2020 Season.

While some fans retained belief that Barcelona's new-boy deserved the accolade, others are convinced otherwise. With the award, De Jong became the third Dutchman after Clarence Seedorf and Wesley Sneijder to receive the honor.
