As many as seven awards will be handed out, with everyone waiting to see whether Van Dijk, Messi, or Cristiano will be named UEFA Men's Player of the Season.

The UEFA Awards are upon us. European football's governing body is gearing up to hand out seven prizes, six of which will be announced during Thursday's Champions League draw – the one exception being the Europa League Player of the Season, which will be revealed the following day.

Four of the seven accolades are positional prizes for the men's game, with UEFA set to name the goalkeeper, defender, midfielder, and forward of the season. However, all eyes will be on the UEFA Men's Player of the Season accolade as Virgil Van Dijk, Lionel Messi, and Cristiano Ronaldo are set to battle it out to succeed last year's winner Luka Modric.

Here are the 2019 UEFA Awards being handed out:

  1. Europa League Player of the Season

  2. Champions League Goalkeeper of the Season

  3. Champions League Defender of the Season

  4. Champions League Midfielder of the Season

  5. Champions League Forward of the Season

  6. UEFA Men's Player of the Season

  7. UEFA Women's Player of the Season

Who are the favorites for the 2019 UEFA Awards?

Europa League Player of the Season

Nominees: Olivier Giroud (Chelsea), Eden Hazard (Chelsea, currently at Real Madrid) and Luka Jovic (Eintracht Frankfurt, currently at Real Madrid)

Last year's winner: Antoine Griezmann

It's a toss between Olivier Giroud, last season's Europa League top scorer with 11 goals, and Eden Hazard, the man who pulled the strings in their successful campaign. While both can stake their claim, we predict Hazard will come away with this trophy.

Champions League Goalkeeper of the Season

Nominees: Alisson Becker (Liverpool), Hugo Lloris (Tottenham), and Marc-Andre ter Stegen (Barcelona)

Last year's winner: Keylor Navas

Is there a better goalkeeper in the world at the moment than Alisson Becker? Some might disagree but the Brazilian is destined to lift this title after winning the Champions League and the Copa America. Ter Stegen kept as many cleans sheets as Alisson in Europe in 2018/19 (6) but the odds aren't in his favor.

Champions League Defender of the Season

Nominees: Trent Alexander-Arnold, (Liverpool), Matthijs de Ligt (Ajax, currently at Juventus), and Virgil Van Dijk (Liverpool)

Last year's winner: Sergio Ramos

Just as the Goalkeeper of the Season prize is destined to go to a Liverpool player, the same can be said about this title, with Virgil Van Dijk having all but won this race. De Ligt was influential in Ajax's run to the semis but it's his more experienced countryman that will come away with this prize.

Champions League Midfielder of the Season

Nominees: Frenkie De Jong (Ajax, currently at Barca), Christian Eriksen (Tottenham), and Jordan Henderson (Liverpool)

Last year's winner: Luka Modric

This should be a close race. Frenkie De Jong garnered attention for his performance at Ajax during the Champions League, eventually securing a move to Barcelona as a result. Henderson will also fancy his odds after captaining Liverpool to the Champions League – who can forget how the Englishman fought hard in the comeback against Barca.

Champions League Forward of the Season

Nominees: Sadio Mane (Liverpool), Lionel Messi (Barcelona), and Cristiano Ronaldo (Juventus)

Last year's winner: Cristiano Ronaldo

This award has Lionel Messi's name written all over it. Despite his semi-final nightmare at Anfield, the Argentine finished the season with 12 goals, winning the Golden Boot. To put that into perspective, Leo scored more than the two other nominees, Cristiano (6) and Mane (4), combined!

UEFA Men's Player of the Year

Nominees: Lionel Messi (Barcelona), Cristiano Ronaldo (Juventus), Virgil Van Dijk (Liverpool)

Last year's winner: Luka Modric

Virgil Van Dijk is the favorite to come away with this prize. Given that the Liverpool center-back is also the favorite for the Ballon d'Or, this comes as little surprise. Messi had an incredible individual season but lifted only one trophy after missing out on another treble. Cristiano, meanwhile, was not at his goalscoring best, netting only six times in Europe for Juve.

UEFA Women's Player of the Year

Nominees: Lucy Bronze (Lyon), Ada Hegerberg (Lyon), and Amandine Henry (Lyon)

Last year's winner: Pernille Harder

All three nominees are Lyon players, meaning they all lifted last season's Women's Champions League. Ada Hegerberg was the club's highest scorer in Europe with seven goals, grabbing a hat-trick in the final against Barcelona. Lucy Bronze, meanwhile, had impressed for her England at the FIFA Women's World Cup and will thus hand the first female Ballon d'Or winner competition.
