Liga MX - Santos back on top in the Apertura 2019

LIGA MX - Santos is back on top; América remains unbeaten

August 26, 2019 By Oscar Rojas
The team in green took advantage of Querétaro's baffling loss. Meanwhile, América scratched one point away from Tigres with several absences.

Matchday 6 in the Mexican top-flight left fans with a new leader in the competition, as Santos recovered the top spot of the Apertura 2019, thanks to their 2-1 victory against Monterrey. Santos' win helped them leapfrog both Querétaro and América, who were unable to beat León and Tigres, respectively.

Querétaro lost their first game of the season in spectacular fashion, as León dismembered them with a 4-0 away win.

Speaking about Las Águilas, Miguel Herrera was able to keep their unbeaten aura with a draw against Tigres. Nevertheless, a fresh string of injuries and this mid-week's action threaten América's condition as the only team without a loss in the tournament,

Elsewhere, the other members of the "Big Four" saw Cruz Azul earn a dramatic draw against Puebla. Pumas and Guadalajara dropped points against Morelia and Necaxa, respectively, raising doubts about their prospects of making it to the final eight teams that will be involved in the playoffs.

Without further ado, let's have a deeper look at what Matchday 6 left for fans to discuss.

Apertura 2019 tournament - Matchday 6 scores

Facts and stats from Matchday 5 of the Apertura 2019 tournament

  • Veracruz has gone one full year without a win. This is a similar feat as the one "accomplished" by Derby County in 2008, when they went 32 games without a win in the Premier League.

  • Toluca managed to beat Tijuana this weekend to earn their first win of the tournament. This leaves Veracruz as the only team uncapable of winning a game in the Apertura 2019.

  • Monterrey conceded twice in the first minutes of any game for the first time in history. Eventually, los Rayados would only be able to score once, making them drop to eighth in Liga MX's standings.

  • This is the 10th time in history in which América goes on to be the last unbeaten team of any tournament.

  • Guadalajara has never been able to bounce back from a 2-0 score at halftime against Necaxa. This weekend, Chivas lost against Los Rayos with a 2-1 score.
