Firpo explains insulting Messi tweets

New Barca signing Junior Firpo explains insulting Messi tweets

August 23, 2019 By Ali M.
Tweets from the Spaniard in which he threatened to break Leo's leg as well as insulting him resurfaced after his Camp Nou arrival.

The beauty of the Internet is that nothing can be deleted from it. This was something Barcelona signing Junior Firpo quickly learned upon making the move to Camp Nou.

The 23-year-old defender completed a move from Real Betis, who Barcelona will face on Sunday, to the Blaugrana earlier this month. However, almost immediately after arriving in Catalonia, disgraceful tweets from his past surfaced.

Those tweets were insulting posts aimed at Lionel Messi, the man who makes everything tick at Barcelona. It was 2012 and the Spaniard was merely 15 years old. Nonetheless, he threatened to "break both of Lionel Messi's legs" with "one kick" while also labeling the Argentine a "son of a b**ch".

Many began wondering what Firpo’s past would mean for his future with the Spanish champions but the player played down those “ugly” tweets. The left-back brushed this controversy aside as an act of foolishness from his childhood days while also holding his hands up and apologizing.

He also insisted that there is no tension with the five-time Ballon d’Or winner, telling Sport: "I see him every day in the changing room.

"I know you're asking this because of the old tweets I made but that's in the past and we've squashed that. It isn't something I want to make a bigger deal out of.

"I don't think he even knew. I was a kid who came through the academy at Betis and I don't think Messi is going to care about that."

The defender then went on to tell Mundo Deportivo: “It's something that doesn't matter and that I can explain without problem.

"They are things that are done at 15 when nobody knows you and when you cannot think that this will have an impact years later.

"I have to apologize and I do it humbly and without problems."

Messi and Firpo have trained together and Sunday could be the first time the two take to the pitch as team-mates. Leo missed out on the opening game due to injury and despite Valverde’s claims that the Argentine isn’t fully fit, there are talks of La Pulga featuring this weekend. As for the Spaniard, he sat out last Friday’s 1-0 loss to Athletic Club but could be handed a debut this weekend.
