Man Utd condemn racial abuse against Pogba

Man Utd issue response over Pogba racial abuse after penalty miss

August 20, 2019 By Ali M.
After missing a crucial spot-kick against Wolves, the Frenchman was met with vile abuse by some fans.

Man United have issued a statement in response to the racial abuse Paul Pogba suffered after Monday’s 1-1 draw with Wolves, with the Red Devils promising to take serious action.

This ugly form of discrimination returned to the headlines on Monday after the Frenchman missed a crucial penalty for the 20-time Premier League champions. With the game tied one-all, the World Cup winner won his side a spot-kick after being tripped inside the opposition box.

The former Juventus midfielder, who had been linked with a move to Real Madrid all summer, decided to take the penalty over Rashford. Unfortunately, Pogba saw his attempt saved, with Man United eventually settling for a single point.

This led to vile abuse from some fans on social media. Rashford and Maguire both went public to defend the 26-year-old and slam the racists while his employers issued a statement in which they condemned the abuse.

“The individuals who expressed these views do not represent the values of our great club and it is encouraging to see the vast majority of our fans condemn this on social media also," Man United’s statement read.

Maguire calls for tougher action to stop racial abuse on social media

"Manchester United has zero tolerance of any form of racism or discrimination and a long-standing commitment to campaigning against it through our #AllRedAllEqual initiative.

"We will work to identify the few involved in these incidents and take the strongest course of action available to us. We also encourage social media companies to take action in these cases."

Pogba isn’t the only black player to have faced racial abuse over a penalty miss this week. Chelsea’s Tammy Abraham was also a victim of this heinous action after he missed his club’s final spot-kick in the UEFA Super Cup after the game went to penalties, subsequently handing Liverpool the title.
