The UEFA Champions League & UEFA Europa League Quarter-finals Draw Rules
Note 1: There is absolutely no rule related to the pairing of two teams from the same country. This means that Real Madrid and Barca or Manchester United and Chelsea for example can be drawn against each other. In the same way, Benfica and Sporting Braga or FC Twente and PSV could be paired together.
Note 2: The draw is not seeded. The size of a team will have no impact on the draw.
Note 3: Friday’s draw will be the last this term for both the UEFA Champions League and the UEFA Europa League. That is because the map will be fully drawn – from the quarter-finals to the final.
The dates for the UEFA Champions League’s upcoming fixtures are as follows:
April 5/6: UEFA Champions League first leg matches in the quarter-finals
April 12/13: UEFA Champions League second leg matches in the quarter-finals
April 25/27: UEFA Champions League first leg matches in the semi-finals
May 3/4: UEFA Champions League second leg matches in the semi-finals
May 28: UEFA Champions League final
For the first time in 7 years, Real Madrid’s name is part of the teams for the Champions League’s quarter-finals draw. Los Blancos finally broke their Last 16 curse earlier on Tuesday to reach this present stage of the competition. The Last 8 comprises 3 surprise teams: Champions League debutant Tottenham Hotspur, Ukrainian giants Shakhtar Donetsk and German Bundesliga strugglers Schalke 04. It remains to be seen how they’ll deal with the power of Manchester United, Chelsea, Internazionale and favourites Barcelona.
The dates for the UEFA Europa League’s upcoming fixtures are as follows:
April 7: UEFA Europa League first leg matches in the quarter-finals
April 14: UEFA Europa League second leg matches in the quarter-finals
April 28: UEFA Europa League first leg matches in the semi-finals
May 5: UEFA Europa League second leg matches in the semi-finals
May 18: UEFA Europa League final
Incredibly, the quarter-finals of the UEFA Europa League will be contested by three teams from Portugal among five other contenders. FC Porto, Benfica and Sporting Braga compose the Portuguese trio as Iberia dominates Europe in this tournament since Spain’s Villarreal also remain alive. As for the Netherlands, they possess two teams in the Last 8 of the Europa League; they are PSV Eindhoven and FC Twente. Meanwhile, Manchester City’s murderers Dynamo Kyiv and Russia’s Spartak Moskva complete the line up for the draws.
