The Reds defeated the Blues to secure their second trophy under Jurgen Klopp.

Following their respective successes in the UEFA Champions League and Europa League last season, both Liverpool and Chelsea have secured another paycheck for their participation in the Super Cup. The pair locked horns inside the Vodafone Park stadium in Istanbul, Turkey on Wednesday and it was the Anfield outfit who emerged as eventual winners.

The exciting encounter was decided via penalty shootouts with the scoreline at 2-2 after extra time. Chelsea academy graduate Tammy Abraham missed the last of the first five kicks to ensure that Jurgen Klopp's men carried the day.

The win for Liverpool made them the first English team to lift the UEFA Super Cup since 2005. The last team from the Premier League to do so was indeed the club from Merseysider as they defeated CSKA Moscow 3-1 at the Stade Louis II in Monaco almost 14 years ago.

Regardless the outcome of the Wednesday's Super Cup clash, both Liverpool and Chelsea will earn €3.5 million (£3.3 million) for participating in the match. However, the Reds will receive an additional bonus of €1 million (£940,000) for lifting the trophy.

In retrospect, Jurgen Klopp's side made over €70 million in prize money for its success in the Champions League last season. On the other hand, Chelsea also earned in the excess of €20 million after beating Arsenal in last season's Europa League Final.
