Liverpool targets Bayer Leverkusen starlet Kai Havertz

July 22, 2019 By Emmanuel K. Budu-Annor
The Reds are looking to complete their second signing in the summer transfer window.

Liverpool has set its sight on signing Bayer Leverkusen sensation Kai Havertz, according to reports. The European champions are yet to do any significant business in this summer's transfer window and aims to bolster its roster with the Premier League season just three weeks away from commencement.

Following their stellar campaign in the Champions League as well as the English Premier League, the Reds have only recruited PEC Zwolle's highly rated teenage defender Sepp van den Berg this summer. A host of players including Nicolas Pepe, Philippe Coutinho, among others have all been linked with moves to Anfield although nothing substantial has emerged yet.

According to Daily Express, Jurgen Klopp's side has now turned its attention to signing one of Germany's biggest emerging talents in Kai Havertz. There are claims that the European champions have been tracking the progress of the youngster over the past seasons and have frequently been in touch with the entourage of the midfielder.

Havertz has been linked with moves to Bayern Munich and Barcelona and the German international recently hinted at taking on a bigger challenge albeit not being in a rush to leave Leverkusen.

"I am honest, at some point the next step must come for me," he told Bild.

"But I'm not going to worry about when exactly that will happen ...

"I really don't know yet whether FC Bayern is the next and right step for me. I also don't know whether foreign countries would not be more suitable for me.

"I really don't think too much about it at the moment. I have that self-confidence, yes [that I could play for Bayern]. But the same applies to other clubs as well."

Meanwhile longstanding transfer target of Liverpool Nabil Fekir completed a shock move to Real Betis on Monday. The former Lyon skipper whose transfer to Liverpool last summer was called off at the 11th hour signed a five-year deal which cost the Spanish outfit 25 million euros.
