Ozil opens up about his relationship with Emery

Ozil opens up about his relationship with Arsenal manager Unai Emery

July 20, 2019 By Ali M.
There have been rumors of a rift between the player and manager, but according to the German, no such thing exists.

Much has been said about the relationship between Mesut Ozil and Unai Emery, and while the rumors claiming the midfielder is not in the Spaniard's plans, the German ace denies there is a rift.

These rumors stem from last season when the 2014 World Cup winner was dropped from the squad. The former PSG tactician blamed injury for his absence but it became clear later on that it wasn't solely down to fitness.

The manager reportedly wanted more from Ozil, who many criticize as being a luxury player. Some news outlet claim that the two had a heated exchange of words, which resulted in the playmaker being benched and even left out of the squad on occasions.

Ozil would eventually work his way back into the starting eleven and despite the current uncertainties surrounding his Emirates Stadium future, the 30-year-old insists he enjoys a good relationship with the gaffer.

"You know I have had a lot of coaches in my career so of course every coach is different and wants something different from you as a player but of course I had a few injuries before the season started last season so I had a tough time," the midfielder said, as per

"At the end of the day, especially the end of the season I played a lot of games. I have a really good relationship with the coach so we are speaking a lot and he wants to help me and I want to help the team.

"You know, what we spoke about between me and the coach I can't say, I can't tell you because if I say something now to you, in the future he doesn't want to speak to me again, so I have to take care of that!

"He just wants to help me, I know that because he has a lot of experience. We are speaking a lot and he wants to help me and as I said before, I know what I can do on the pitch.

"I want to help the team and I think it will be going well this season, for me and the team."

Ozil had been linked with a move to Turkey at one point but after being named one of the Gunners' five captains, a north London stay is now his fate. One positive ahead of the upcoming season is Mesut's assurances that his knee and back problems are a thing of the past.

"I am really happy," the playmaker added. "I am fit.

"We train really hard to be fit for the whole season, we are doing our job very well we work hard together and we showed, especially against Bayern Munich so we look very fresh, we played our game and deserved to win."
