The two bitter rivals will lock horns in their first title match since 2011. Get a hold of the rivalry between El Tri and the Yanks with our detailed guide.

What is Mexico and USA's CONCACAF Gold Cup record?

Mexico is the most winning team in CONCACAF Gold Cup history, with seven titles to their name. Their last win in this competition came in the 2015 edition, where they defeated Jamaica in the title match with a 3-1 score. This will be their first CGC final against the USMNT since 2011. That game concluded with a 4-2 win for El Tri.

The USMNT is the second best team in the history of this tournament, having won six titles to this date. The Stars and Stripes are eager to win  back-to-back Gold Cup titles for the second time ever, following their conquests from 2005 and 2007. The defending champions will be involved in their fourth Gold Cup final in the last five editions.

What is Mexico and USA's form ahead of this game?

Mexico is still unbeaten under Gerardo "Tata" Martino, even after two straight games that have been decided in extra time and a penalty shootout. El Tri eliminated Costa Rica after penalties in the Quarter final stage, and then, the Mexican side eliminated Haiti after 120 minutes of playing time.

The USMNT have won five games in a row en route to the final. The Stars and stripes eliminated two teams from the Caribbean in the KO stage, having won 1-0 against Curacao and 3-1 against Jamaica. The  Reggae Boyz were the first team to score against Gregg Berhalter's men, which gives us a glimpse on how things could go down on Sunday.

Mexico vs USA - Head-to-head

  • This will be the 69th meeting between Mexico and the USMNT.

  • Mexico has won 50% of their previous 68 games against the Stars and Stripes.

  • The Yanks have beaten El Tri in 19 of those 68 games.

  • This will be the 43rd competitive match between these teams. Mexico has won 24 of those, with nine wins going the other way and nine draws.

  • This will be the seventh Gold Cup meeting between these teams. Mexico has won four times, with two wins for the Yanks.

  • Mexico and the USMNT will lock horns for the sixth time in a CONCACAF Gold Cup final. El Tri has won four of those (the last one in 2011), while the USMNT has only been able to win their final match in 2007.

  • The last game between these teams ended in a 1-0 win for the Stars and Stripes. Neither Gregg Berhalter nor Gerardo Martino were in charge of either side back in September 2018, when that game took place.

Mexico vs USA - Major absences

Mexico will have to deal with Erick Gutiérrez's absence, following the thigh injury he picked up in the match against Canada. Coach Gerardo Martino will return to the bench after serving his one-match ban, and he will also hope for captain Andrés Guardado to be available, since the player has been subbed off due to a muscular complaint that has kept him from playing the full 90 minutes in the past two games.

As for the Stars and Stripes, coach Gregg Berhalter will have a full squad to choose from in what will be his first match as USMNT's coach against Mexico. His main doubt has to do with his starting striker, with Gyasi Zardes and Jozy Altidore fighting for that spot.
