Ellen White makes history with goal vs USWNT

FIFA Women's World Cup 2019: Ellen White makes history with goal vs USWNT

July 2, 2019 By Emmanuel K. Budu-Annor
Another game, another Ellen White goal.

England forward Ellen White authored a new chapter in the FIFA Women's World Cup's record books by grabbing a goal in the semifinal clash with USA on Tuesday.

In what was a keenly contested first 45 minutes of the encounter, the Manchester City forward was called into action in the 19th minute to restore parity after Alex Morgan had opened the scoring for the Americans. A cross from Mead from the left flank found its way into the USWNT's penalty area and White, who was waiting in the mix, tapped the ball into the far post.

Nonetheless, the momentum to potentially go ahead was not sustained by the Lioness who were pinned back once again with Alex Morgan scoring in the 26th minute. Meanwhile, Ellen White successfully made her way into the record books as she became the first England player to score in five successive World Cup games.

Also, with six goals, the 30-year-old striker became the first Lioness to score that tally in a single campaign at the FIFA Women's World Cup. All in all, she is the third English player after Gary Lineker and Harry Kane to score six goals at the tournament. The pair did so in 1986 and 2018 respectively.
