La Celeste are out of the 2019 Copa America!

Peru has staged the 2019 Copa America's biggest upset yet by eliminating one of the competition's favorites Uruguay in a Round of 16 clash. Saturday's encounter saw Los Incas progress to the semi-final with victory from penalty shootouts after the regular proceeding ended in stalemates.

It was La Celeste superstar Luis Suarez who emerged the villain with Peru shot-stopper Pedro Gallese saving the Barcelona forward's attempt at goal. Prior to his mishap, the 32-year-old forward as well as Edinson Cavani both had a goal ruled offside while their team chased a winner inside the Fonte Nova Arena in Salvador.

With Peru progressing to the last eight as one of the two best third-placed teams in the tournament, only a handful would have predicted a semi-final berth for Ricardo Gareca's side. Nonetheless, the men in red and white will now take on Chile on July 4.

Meanwhile, a visibly distraught Luis Suarez was pictured shedding tears amid the turn of events. The Barcelona star was responsible for two of Uruguay's goals at the 2019 Copa America.
