FIFA Women's World Cup: Henry nets historic extra-time goal to eliminate Brazil

June 23, 2019 By Emmanuel K. Budu-Annor
It took a strike in extra-time by the hosts to send Marta and co packing from this year's FIFA Women's World Cup.

Another bit of FIFA Women's World Cup history was made at the Stade Oceane in Brazil and France's dreaded encounter on Sunday. In what was a keenly contested affair, Les Bleues skipper Amandine Henry's strike proved to be the difference.

Both sides kept things tidy at the back to enter the first half break with a cleansheet, but the game sprang into life after France's Valerie Gauvin slided the ball home from close range to open the scoring in the 52nd minute. 11 minutes later, Brazil restored parity with the help of the VAR through Thaisa Moreno.

Not much ensued afterward although Amandine Henry's 106th minute strike served the Selecao with a heartbreak despite their persistence. The record books were subsequently revised as the captain's goal was France's first-ever in extra-time at the knockout stage of the FIFA Women's World Cup.

Les Bleues will now face either Spain or USA in the quarter-finals. Watch Amandine Henry's historic moment below (geo-restriction may apply):
