2019 FIFA Women's World Cup: How to watch Germany vs Nigeria live on June 22, 2019

June 21, 2019 By Ali M.
The round of 16 in the Women's World Cup kicks off with this showdown between the European heavyweights and the Super Falcons. Check out our match preview for more info.

What is the form of Germany compared to Nigeria?

Germany head into this tie on the back of a four-game winning streak. Their most recent fixture saw them bury four past South Africa without a reply. That result saw them maintain their 15-game unbeaten run, with Die Nationalelf failing to score in only one of those games.

As for Nigeria, they qualified for the knockout stage despite losing 1-0 to France in their final group stage game. This was their fourth defeat from their last six games in all competitions and their sixth from their last 10.

Key match stats

  • Germany have the joint-best defensive record at France as they are one of only two nations yet to concede a goal -- the other being USA.

  • Sara Däbritz is Die Nationalelf's top scorer in this tournament so far and is the only German player to have scored more than once (2 goals).

  • Germany have now gone 20 World Cup games without conceding a first-half goal, a run that stretches all the way back to 2003.

  • After Nigeria sealed their spot in the knockout stage, this became the very first FIFA Women's World Cup to see two African nations reach the last 16 -- the other qualificant beings Cameroon.

Germany is aiming to win a third FIFA Women's World Cup title and Nigeria stands in their way. Die Nationalelf have shown their ruthlessness in the group stage; however, their attacking flair has not been up to par.

Despite a 4-0 win over South Africa, the European giants were only able to score a goal in each of their first two games. Instead, their defensive resilience took center stage.

Voss-Tecklenburg's side are yet to concede a single goal so far. Whether Nigeria will test their back-four is unknown but Germany will be confident of going through.

The Super Falcons route to the last 16 was not as glamorous as their counterpart. Their fate rested in the hands of Thailand as they needed the Asian minnows to avoid a 3-0 defeat to Chile to make it through. The South Americans were leading 2-0 and were awarded a late penalty but failed to convert, which meant Nigeria completed the round of 16 lineup.

Unfortunately, Asisat Oshoala and Co. look headed for an exit. A win over Germany appears to be a task too difficult to accomplish, but the 2019 FIFA Women's World Cup has shown that anything is possible.
