Marta break all-time World Cup scoring record

WATCH: Marta scores vs Italy to break all-time World Cup scoring record

June 18, 2019 By Emmanuel K. Budu-Annor
The six-time World Player of the Year has struck again!

Another piece of history was molded at Stade du Hainaut and, this time, Brazil's Marta was the sole architect. The veteran striker landed herself among the World Cup's greats by scoring her side's only goal against Italy which sealed qualification to the knockout phase at France 2019.

After a host of unsuccessful attempts at goal, Brazil was handed a lifeline in the second-half with a penalty decision going in the South Americans favor. As a result, Marta stepped up to do the honors, converting the spotkick for his second goal at this year's tournament and her 17th in all appearances at the FIFA Women's World Cup.

The 33 years old Orlando Pride striker subsequently surpassed retired Germany striker Miroslav Klose to become the all-time leading scorer at the men's or women's World Cups. Her retired compatriot Ronaldo has been demoted to the third position with 14 goals while the legendary Germany striker Birgit Prinz and the USWNT's Abby Wambach complete the Top 5 with 14 goach apiece.

Despite Brazil condemning Italy to a defeat as a result of Marta's lone goal, the Selecao finished third in Group C behind Australia and Le Azzure. The charge for a first World Cup title is now under serious threat as they will now face hosts France in the Round of 16 clash.
