Sam Kerr makes FIFA WC history with four goals

Australia's Sam Kerr makes World Cup history with four goals vs Jamaica

June 18, 2019 By Emmanuel K. Budu-Annor
Stunning, simply stunning!

The Matildas talisman Sam Kerr has landed herself a few World Cup records by scoring a poker in Tuesday's group encounter with Jamaica. In what was an enthralling encounter, the 25-year-old forward secured the runners-up spot in Group C for her side despite Brazil defeating Italy in the other fixture.

Kerr began her historic night in Grenoble by heading in her first goal in the 11th minute. The Australia skipper grabbed her second with another header three minutes to half-time.

After Havana Marguerite Solaun had made history with Jamaica's first-ever World Cup goal in the 49th minute, Kerr struck again 20 minutes later to become the first Australian to score a hat-trick at a World Cup.

To seal her domineering campaign in the night's encounter, the Chicago Red Stars added a fourth goal in the 83rd minute to take her tally in the competition so far to five in three games.

As a result, Sam Kerr became only the third player in the FIFA Women's World Cup's history to score four times in a single match. The other players are Michelle Akers and Alex Morgan of the USWNT.

Having fired the Aussies to the knockout stage, Kerr and her teammates will now take on Norway in the Round of 16. Group C's third place side, Brazil, will go head-to-head with France while table toppers Italy awaits the best third-placed team from either Group A, B or F.
