Current form: Germany vs China

Although Germany are ranked only behind the United States in the world and are the current Olympic champions, die Nationalelf endured disappointment at their last major tournament as they were knocked out in the quarter-finals by the Netherlands at the 2017 EURO championship. That result was especially shocking considering that Germany had won the last six competitions in a row, and now under new manager Martina Voss-Tecklenburg, the pressure will certainly be on to try to have a major impact at this summer's FIFA Women's World Cup.

With the men's side suffering an embarrassinge early exit last summer, Germany's women's team will be hoping to avoid the same kind of negative result, but so far, the team are unbeaten in 2019. Notably, they beat this summer's hosts France, as well as Sweden, and came from behind twice to secure a 2-2 draw with Japan.

As for China, they have had less than consistent form since the start of 2019. The Steel Roses kicked off the year with back-to-back wins against Nigeria (3-0) and South Korea (1-0) in the Meizhou Four Nations Tournament, which they won. However, they performed quite poorly in the latest edition of the Algarve Cup, during which they suffered defeats to Norway and Denmark, before being beaten by the Netherlands following a penalty shoot-out. China did manage to bounce back again by defeating Russia and Cameroon in the Wuhan International Tournament to win that competition. That being said, like the Meizhou Four Nations Tournament, they also served as hosts, and there were only four sides competing, with Croatia and Romania completing the respective quartets.

How they got to the World Cup: Germany vs China

Germany cruised through qualifiers to easily top their group without much fuss, and they will be expected to make a deep run in this competition - perhaps even get to the final if everything goes their way. China, for their part, finished third at the 2018 AFC Women's Asian Cup and will be hoping to impress upon their return, but they have a terrible record against Germany - nine wins played, zero won.
