However, they performed quite poorly in the latest edition of the Algarve Cup, during which they suffered defeats to Norway and Denmark, before being beaten by the Netherlands following a penalty shoot-out. China did manage to bounce back again by defeating Russia and Cameroon in the Wuhan International Tournament to win that competition. That being said, like the Meizhou Four Nations Tournament, they also served as hosts, and there were only four sides competing, with Croatia and Romania completing the respective quartets.

Germany cruised through qualifiers to easily top their group without much fuss, and they will be expected to make a deep run in this competition - perhaps even get to the final if everything goes their way. China, for their part, finished third at the 2018 AFC Women's Asian Cup and will be hoping to impress upon their return, but they have a terrible record against Germany - nine wins played, zero won.
