Panama team profile for the CONCACAF Gold Cup

Panama team profile: key players, roster, coach for 2019 CONCACAF Gold Cup

May 30, 2019 By Oscar Rojas
Los Canaleros enter a new era, with a new coach and some young players. Will they be able to repeat their previous performances in this competition?

What is Panama's CONCACAF Gold Cup record?

Panamá has been present in seven of the 14 CONCACAF Gold Cups that have taken place up to this date. Los Canaleros have never won the title, with their best result being a second-place finish in 2005 and in 2013. Panama has not missed a single CONCACAF Gold Cup edition since the 2003 tournament, which was held in Mexico and in the United States.

What is Panama's roster for the 2019 CONCACAF Gold Cup?

*This squad will be trimmed down to 23 men before the beginning of the competition.

Goalkeepers: Luis Mejía, Orlando Mosquera, José Calderón, José Guerra.

Defenders: Michael Murillo, Adolfo Machado, Fidel Escobar, Harold Cummings, César Blackman, Erick Davis, Jan Carlos Vargas, Roberto Chen, Kevin Galván, Gabriel Gómez, Edgar Góndola, Francisco Palacios, Román Torres.

Midfielders: Alberto Quintero, Armando Cooper, Omar Browne, José Luis Rodríguez, Aníbal Godoy, Ernesto Walker, Abdiel Ayarza, Nelson Barahona, Edgar Bárcenas, Rolando Botello, Ricardo Buitrago, Luis Ovalle, Valentín Pimentel, Marcos Sánchez.

Strikers: Gabriel Torres, José Fajardo, Abdiel Arroyo, Rolando Blackburn, Ronaldo Dinolis, Jesús González, Leslie Heraldez, Romesh Ivey, Armando Polo.

Who are Panama's key players for the 2019 CONCACAF Gold Cup?

Román Torres – The team's captain and spiritual leader will probably be involved in his last Gold Cup. Some of his generation's best players, such as Blas Pérez, Luis Tejada and Jaime Penedo have already ended their international careers, but Seattle Sounders' center back believes he still has something to offer for Los Canaleros, especially after scoring the goal that qualified the Central American side to the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

Alberto Quintero – "El Chiquitín" is one of the best dribblers in all CONCACAF teams, and his ball-handling skills will come in handy for Panama in this competition. Quintero plays for Peru's Universitario de Deportes, following his stints in the MLS and with a couple of Liga MX sides.

Gabriel Gómez – Even if Gómez announced his retirement from international duty, the center back was included in the 2019 CONCACAF Gold Cup roster. This footballer has scored 11 goals in 144 games for La Marea Roja. His 35 years of age seem to be a problem, but his presence would come in handy for a team in transition.

Who is Panama's coach?

Julio Dely Valdés – This former Panama striker, who even had the chance to play for PSG and Malaga, took the interim gig as Panama's boss after Hernán Gómez's resignation. This is Dely Valdes' second stint as boss, following his three-year stay from 2010 to 2013. The Dely Valdes brothers nearly made Panama's World Cup dreams come true for the 2014 World Cup, but the USMNT eliminated them with a last-minute defeat.
