Bruno Fernandes responds to Premier League transfer rumors

May 24, 2019 By Emmanuel K. Budu-Annor
The 25-year-old midfielder has been linked with moves to both Manchester United and Manchester City.

Sporting CP skipper Bruno Fernandes has welcomed the idea of playing in the Premier League in the future but has poured cold water on an imminent switch. The Portuguese midfielder has reportedly sparked a transfer battle between Manchester United and Manchester City after impressing in the Primera Liga this season.

Fernandes, who has been scouted by both English club as well as a host of other top European teams, finished the domestic league season with 20 goals and 13 assists. Overall, the 25-year-old midfielder has scored 31 goals in 50 appearances for Sporting.

Ahead of the upcoming Taca de Portugal final encounter with FC Porto, Bruno Fernandes was quizzed with regards to his future. There, the midfielder revealed that despite being frequently linked with a move to the English Premier League, he does not know whether the game will be his last for Sporting.

"I have no idea. For now I have a contract and everything that might happen, will have to come in time," he said according to Portuguese outlet Diário de Notícias.

"Right now I'm focused on the ambitions of Sporting, which are mine. I honestly don't know anything else.

"I always said that I came back to Sporting because they have ambitions like the ones I have.

"I said that I would leave Sporting once my ambitions were greater than those of the club, but they are not at the moment.

"The ambition to be national champion is still here and so I have no reason to leave. Obviously if an irrefutable proposal for me arrives, and it's good for the club, let's get together and decide together."

He added: "I always said that I was an ambitious player and from a very early age I have a dream of playing in England, where you can live pure football without big controversy, without big cases.

"Now, any of the other leagues, Germany, Spain and Italy are also very good and ambitious. But as I said I'm good at Sporting and now I'm focused on the cup. Then I want to make a good pre-season and if anything comes up I'm available to do what is best for the club."
