Ajax pays homage to 'Appie' with Eredivisie title

Official: Ajax wins 34th Eredivisie title, pays tribute to 'Appie'

May 15, 2019 By Emmanuel K. Budu-Annor
A 4-1 win over De Graafschap on Wednesday ensured a record-extending title win for the Amsterdam club.

It has been almost two years since Ajax starlet Abdelhak 'Appie' Nouri collapsed on the pitch and had to retire due brain damage and, on Wednesday, his teammates made his dream come true by winning the club's 34th Eredivisie title. Having unofficially won the league following PSV's slump against AZ last week, Erik Ten Hag's side cruised to an emphatic 4-1 victory against De Graafschap to finish the campaign with 86 points atop the table.

The title completed a domestic double for the Johan Cruyff Arena outfit who emerged as victors in the KNVB Beker earlier this month. And following the final whistle, the merry-making began in full force with the Amsterdam club dedicating the win to Abdelhak Nouri by sporting a celebratory shirt with the No.34.

Back in July 2017, the-then 20-year-old midfielder collapsed during a pre-season match against Werder Bremen and suffered a cardiac arrhythmia attack. He was subsequently left him with severe and permanent brain damage and was forced to retire.

It was the former Ajax academy prodigy's dream to play a role in his club lifting its 34th league title after it last won the trophy in 2014. Upon being promoted to the senior side, Nouri wore the No.34 shirt to embrace the quest of which he has unfortunately missed out on.

Meanwhile, the league win concludes a sensational season for Ajax who almost secured an unprecedented Champions League Final feat but for a defeat to Tottenham Hotspur in the semis.
