Griezmann tells Atlético execs he will LEAVE the club this summer

May 14, 2019 By Oscar Rojas
The French footballer is set to pursue a deal with Barcelona, according to sources close to the 2018 World Cup winner.

Antoine Griezmann will play his final match for Atlético Madrid this weekend. The French footballer has held a meeting with coach Diego Simeone and president Miguel Angel Gil to let them know about his intentions to leave the club.

On Monday, the club had revealed its intention to hold a meeting with the striker, who had been linked with a move to Barcelona for the past couple of weeks. A report by Marca states that the meeting has taken place already, and Griezmann will leave the club as soon as the 2018-19 La Liga season comes to an end.

Atlético's desires to hear Griezmann's intentions from his own voice were satisfied today, in order to end all controversy such as the one that surrounded him last year. The player's buyout clause had increased before the World Cup to over $200M, but now, the team interested in signing the footballer will "only" have to pay a bit over $120M for his services.

The player has issued a farewell video on Atlético's Twitter feed. Don't worry, we'll provide you with the proper translation for you to understand his words.

"Hi to all. After speaking with El Cholo (Diego Simeone), with Miguel Ángel (Gil, Atlético chairman), and with the people in the team's offices, I wanted to let all of you Atletico fans out there know that I've decided to leave the club to search for other challenge. It's been hard for me to choose that path, but I feel it's time for me to do so. I wanted to thank you for all your love during the past five years. I've won my first club trophies here and I've lived some incredible moments, which will forever live in my mind. I will always carry you guys in my heart. It's not easy for a player to feel such love for a club, and I wanted you to know, right after I told the boss and the owners about this decision. I want to thank you all for these five years, trust me when I say that I've left it all on the pitch. I tried to be a good kid, I was always available whenever you asked me for a picture either home and away. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. Goodbye."
