Atlético Madrid's U.S. pre-season tour will include a stop in Orlando, but not to spend some time in theme parks. In a press release issued earlier today, MLS officers revealed that Los Colchoneros will be playing against the league's All-Star cast in the annual MLS All-Star Game.
The fixture will be played at 10:00 PM ET on July 31 and will cap the team's pre-season campaign in the United States. The red-and-white side will have played two games in the International Champions Cup prior to the 2019 All-Star showdown.
Atlético will become the second Spanish team to feature in this iconic friendly clash, following Real Madrid's appearance in 2017. This will also be the 15th time in which the MLS All-Star game will have the league's stars facing a European side. Fulham was the first European team to accept the challenge in 2005, while Juventus was the last club to date to face the best footballers in the North American league.
Out of those 14 matches, the MLS All-Stars have won seven, with the remaining games going the other way. The last three editions of this clash have been won by Juventus (2018), Real Madrid (2017), and Arsenal (2016).
While it is still early in the MLS season to know which players will be involved in this summer's encounter, it is safe to say that Zlatan Ibrahimovic (LA Galaxy), Carlos Vela (Los Angeles FC), and Wayne Rooney (DC United) will all be called up, after their impressive start to the season.
MLS All Star vs Atletico Madrid will be broadcast live via beIN Sports in Australia and France whilst TSN will showcase it in Canada. In the United States, viewers will be able to watch the American vs Spanish duel on Fox Sports 1 and Univision channels.
