FIFA Women's World Cup: Argentina team profile

Argentina team profile: key players, full squad list, coach for 2019 FIFA Women's World Cup

May 31, 2019 By Oscar Rojas
The women's Albiceleste side has not been as successful as the men's team. Can they change that this summer in France?

What is Argentina's history in the FIFA Women's World Cup?

This will be the third World Cup appearance for the Argentinean National Team. Their previous performances in this competition were rather baffling, since they are still looking not only for their first win, but for their first point. The Argentine team made it to the 2003 and 2007 editions of the tournament, and in both of those tournaments they were only able to score one goal. The only difference between their Women's World Cup appearances was that La Albiceleste conceded three more goals in the 2007 edition, where they allowed 18 goals from their rivals.

What is Argentina's group at the 2019 FIFA Women's World Cup?

The South Americans are in Group D. For more information and analysis on Argentina's Last 16 qualification chances, check out Group D: Argentina, England, Japan, Scotland - 2019 FIFA Women's World Cup teams.

What is Argentina's full squad for the 2019 FIFA Women's World Cup?

Goalkeepers: Vanina Correa, Gabriela Garton, Solana Pereyra

Defenders: Agustina Barroso, Eliana Stabile, Adriana Sachs, Aldana Cometti, Virginia Gomez, Gabriela Chavez, Natalie Juncos

Midfielders: Vanesa Santana, Ruth Bravo, Estefania Banini, Florencia Bonsegundo, Miriam Mayorga, Lorena Benitez, Mariela Coronel, Mariana Larroquette, Dalila Ippolito

Strikers: Yael Oviedo, Sole Jaimes, Belen Potassa, Milagros Menendez

Who are the key players to watch for Argentina at the 2019 FIFA Women's World Cup?

Team captain Estefanía Banini is not only their spiritual leader, but she is also their finest player. Nicknamed "La Messi", Banini's resume includes a Copa Libertadores title with Colo Colo and two Player of the Year Awards in 2013 and 2014. She joined the Spanish league in 2016, where she currently plays for Levante. Banini is a skillful right-footed player, with her trademark long-distance shots being one of her many weapons.

Who is Argentina's coach?

63-year-old Carlos Borrello is Argentina's most successful women's coach. He is currently living his second stint as Argentina's boss, a team he previously coached from 2003 to 2012. He is the only tactician to lead Argentina to a World Cup, since he was in charge of the team during their two previous World Cup appearances. Furthermore, he won the South American championship with the team in 2006, being the only trophy ever won by the female version of La Albiceleste.

What are Argentina's fixtures in the FIFA Women's World Cup?

These will be Argentina's group stage games in the FIFA Women's World Cup.
