WATCH: Shane Long scores the FASTEST goal in the Premier League's history

April 23, 2019 By Emmanuel K. Budu-Annor
History was made in Tuesday's Premier League clash between Watford and Southampton.

7.69 seconds. That is all it took Southampton forward Shane Long to open the scoring in his side's Premier League clash with Watford on Tuesday.

The 32-year-old Irishman, as a result, landed himself in the Premier League's history book, breaking a 19-year-old record held by Tottenham Hotspur legend Ledley King for the fastest goal scored in the competition. All it took from him was resilience and grit as he quickly capitalized on a defensive blunder by the host to land himself on the scoresheet.

With the referee blowing his whistle for Watford to begin the proceedings, the ball was passed back to centre-back Craig Cathcart but the defender saw his effort to clear the ball out blocked by the onrushing striker. Armed with the ball, Long simply lifted the ball over Ben Foster to seal his feat.

What this meant was that the former Hull City and West Brom forward required 2.13 seconds less than King to write his name into the Premier League's history book. The latter's goal was registered for Spurs in an away encounter with Bradford back in December 2000.
