Messi named UCL Player of the Week

Messi named Champions League Player of the Week after Man Utd heroics

April 19, 2019 By Ali M.
The Argentine scored a brace against the Red Devils en route to a 4-0 aggregate win, but not everyone believed he deserved it.

Tuesday was an excellent day for Lionel Messi. Not only did the Argentine lead Barcelona to the Champions League semi-finals for the first time since winning the title-winning campaign in 2014/14, but the 31-year-old put an end to his awful goalscoring curse.

For six long years and 11 consecutive quarter-final games, the five-time Ballon d'Or winner had not scored a single goal. However, La Pulga broke that goal drought in the second leg of the Blaugrana's Man United clash.

Hosting the Red Devils at Camp Nou, it did not take too long for Leo to find the back of the net, breaking the deadlock in the 16th minute after nutmegging Fred. The Argentine quickly doubled the Catalan giant's lead, adding a second only four minutes later.

Coutinho would score the third in the second half en route to a 4-0 aggregate win, but it was Messi who grabbed all the headlines. His two-goal heroics have earned him an honor, being named the Champions League Player of the Week.

However, while many were quick to congratulate the iconic number 10, others disagreed with this choice. Some felt that Heung-Min Son, having also scored a brace against Man City, and Kevin De Bruyne, who grabbed a hat-trick of assists in the 3-2 thriller, were more deserving while there were also shoutouts for Ajax captain Matthijs de Ligt after their win at Juventus.

Messi's Barcelona is now preparing to take on Liverpool in the penultimate stage with the sole aim of making the final. Should they progress, they will battle it out with Ajax or Tottenham for the title.
