Pogba to be named captain to ward off Real Madrid

Paul Pogba to be offered Man Utd captaincy to ward off Real Madrid interest

April 13, 2019 By Emmanuel K. Budu-Annor
The Frenchman is in line to be appointed as the new skipper of the Red Devils.

Manchester United is ready to appoint Paul Pogba as the new captain in a bid to keep him at the club amid interest from Real Madrid, reports from England claim. The 26-year-old midfielder has been heavily linked with a move to the Spanish club in recent times following the second coming of Zinedine Zidane.

A few weeks ago, the French manager aired his admiration for the former Juventus man, sparking speculations of a potential move for his compatriot's signature. Quizzed about the possibility of the midfielder moving to Madrid, he said: "I really like Pogba and you know that.

"I know him very well, he's a different kind of player and he can provide many things because of his skills. He knows how to attack and defend.

"However, he's not my player. He plays for United and we have to respect that. He's always said that he likes Madrid."

Zidane's comments were met with appraisal from Pogba as the Manchester United midfielder kept the door open by flirting with the idea of playing for Real Madrid in the future.

"Like I've always said, Real Madrid is a dream for anyone. It's one of the biggest clubs in the world," Pogba at a press conference while on international duty for France.

"There is also [Zinedine] Zidane as a coach and it's a dream for anybody who likes football.

"For now, I'm at Manchester. We don't know what the future holds. I'm at Manchester and I'm happy."

Nevertheless, the Red Devils have apparently told the World Cup winner that an imminent transfer is off the table. As per UK tabloid Mirror, a new contract is being prepared for Pogba and his responsibility at Old Trafford looks set to be doubled with his appointment as the skipper for next season.

The development is endorsed by the fact that current club captain Antonio Valencia is set to depart this summer while his deputy Ashley Young could be reduced to a squad player for next season.

Momentarily Paul Pogba, David De Gea and Chris Smalling are among the candidates that could be handed the armband. However, the Frenchman is believed to be the front-runner having previously been conferred the leadership role under former manager Jose Mourinho.
