Spanish exec plots massive Copa del Rey overhaul

Spanish football exec plots massive Copa del Rey overhaul

April 9, 2019 By Oscar Rojas
The decision is intended to lower the amount of games that need to be played if any team wants to reach the final.

The Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) plans to make a more exciting Copa del Rey, which is set to be approved by April 29.

The RFEF will try to add intensity to the first rounds of the tournament, by erasing the current format of a two-legged tie. Instead, president Luis Rubiales plans to have a single-match KO in all rounds, just like in the FA Cup, with teams from the lower-tier categories always playing as hosts, to make things even when facing top-caliber sides.

The tournament's semi-finals would be played as a two-legged tie, and the final would be played at a neutral ground as it is played today.

These changes would also allow the Spanish Football Federation to revamp another competition: the Spanish Super Cup. President Rubiales is keen on making the Super Cup a four-team tournament, and it would be held outside of Spain, just like the one that kicked off the 2018-19 season in Morocco.

The only exception for top-tier teams to enter the Copa del Rey at a later stage would be if they are involved in the "new" Spanish Super Cup.

While negotiations among club execs and Spanish Football authorities are underway, it's safe to say that both tournaments could see these changes taking place as soon as the 2019-20 season.
