Messi makes history in Barcelona's 2-0 win against Atletico Madrid

April 6, 2019 By Emmanuel K. Budu-Annor
The Blaugrana skipper landed himself in the Spanish league's record book once more.

He is almost becoming predictable as, once again, Lionel Messi reached yet another historic landmark in Barcelona's 2-0 win over Atletico Madrid. The 31-year-old Argentine forward got on the scoresheet to seal all three points for the Blaugrana who have now established an 11-point lead atop the table in La Liga.

In that respect, Lionel Messi became the player in the history of the Spanish top-flight league with the most number of wins with his tally momentarily standing at 335. The five-time Ballon d'Or winner entered Saturday's potential title-deciding clash with Atletico tied on 334 wins with the legendary Real Madrid goalkeeper Iker Casillas.

Prior to Messi's feat of the night, Luis Suarez broke the deadlock in the 85th minute after Atletico Madrid's resilience had kept the host at bay despite Diego Costa's sending off. As a result, the pair became the only two players to have scored 20 or more goals in La Liga this season.

With 43 goals and 18 assists in 40 games this season, Messi also extended his record of scoring 40 or more goals in each of his last 10 seasons for Barcelona. Watch his goal vs Atletico Madrid below [geo-restrictions may apply]:
