EPL's first-ever winter break in detail

Details of Premier League's first-ever winter break revealed

April 3, 2019 By Oscar Rojas
The 2019-20 season will have a few changes, but there will be some restrictions to what happens during that stint.

English Premier League clubs will finally get a chance to kick back during the winter, but that does not mean that there will be no restrictions with the league's recently created winter break.

Since 2013, English clubs demanded to have some time off like the rest of the leagues do. In order to keep fans interested in the competition, their request had not been granted. Before the end of 2018, FA officers revealed that plans to have a winter break had succeeded, and there have been some interesting revelations about it today.

Former FA exec Richard Scudamore revealed that the winter break will not bring the Premier League to a full stop, despite the name being given by fans.

"It's all come together at a nice time and it's now definite. We will have this split weekend and we are calling it a 'mid-season player break,'" Scudamore stated.

Scudamore added more details on what the term "split" means to league officers.

"We're not calling it a winter break. Why is that? Because we're not breaking. We're playing five games one week and five the other," Scudamore said.

All teams will have a meeting to discuss terms of this ruling, especially one that will forbid them from playing lucrative friendlies in Dubai, Qatar or any other country. The idea to have all teams resting will surely benefit those playing international competitions, since most Premier League players come down with injuries in crunch moments of the season due to the lack of proper rest.
