Cristiano Ronaldo escapes ban after nasty gesture vs Atlético

The player will not go unpunished after mocking Diego Simeone's celebration from the first leg.

Cristiano Ronaldo escaped a large ban from UEFA on Thursday, as football's governing body in Europe charged the footballer of "improper conduct". The player did not walk away from this charge entirely, as he will have to pay a fine for the incident that took place right after the end of the Round of 16 clash between Juventus and Atlético.

The Portuguese ace mocked Diego Simeone's celebration from the first leg, but his gesture was aimed at Atlético's supporters, which caused UEFA to take action on this matter.

With that in mind, UEFA decided to slap a $22,000 ban on the footballer, similar to the one slapped to Simeone following his actions in the first leg. With this decision, the Portuguese ace will be around to play against Ajax in the tournament's quarterfinals.

Cristiano Ronaldo was crucial for Juventus's Round of 16 win against Los Colchoneros, as his hat-trick during the second leg propelled the bianconeri to the next round.
