The Bianconeri must overturn a 2-0 deficit from the first leg if they wish to progress to the Champions League quarter-finals.

On Tuesday, Juventus will host Atletico Madrid in a crucial Champions League showdown. A spot in the quarter-finals is at stake for the Italians as they will need to overcome a heavy deficit in order to progress.

Despite recruiting Champions League king Cristiano Ronaldo over the summer, the Portuguese ace and his team-mates failed to make a mark in the first leg of this round of 16 tie. As a result, the Bianconeri fell to a 2-0 defeat in an embarrassing match for the club and the five-time Ballon d'Or winner.

A comeback is thus required at the Allianz Stadium in Turin. While Allegri boasts the all-time leading goalscorer in this competition in the form of Ronaldo, history backs neither the player nor the club to make the quarter-finals.

Firstly, it should be noted that the 34-year-old has crashed out of this European tournament at this exact stage for his last two clubs. In 2003/04, Porto eliminated Man United in the last 16 in what was the Portuguese ace's debut season. Fast forward to 2009/10, his debut season with Real Madrid, and it was Lyon that knocked out Los Blancos to make the quarter-finals.

However, Bianconeri fans cannot view Ronaldo as an inherited curse as the Italians boast a record they aren't too proud of. The Serie A champion will have to pull off a miraculous comeback, but Juventus has never succeeded in achieving so.

In each of the five instances the Old Lady lost the away first leg by a 2-0 scoreline, they went on to suffer an aggregate defeat, most recently against Bayern Munich in the 2012/13 quarter-final.

To make things worse, Atletico Madrid has progressed in all the previous five times they won the home first leg 2-0. With history not on their side, Cristiano and his pals must rely on their fighting spirit if they wish to keep their European dream alive or else they will continue an unwanted trend.
